High-Capacity Artbin Embroidery Spool Holder

64 large spools in one Artbin box — ten more than stock — in four sections you lift out with one hand.

This spool holder fits the popular Artbin Super Satchel storage boxes and replaces the stock insert with a sturdier, higher-capacity design built for larger 38 mm embroidery spools. Four independent sections each hold 16 spools, for 64 in the box. Need room for even bigger thread? The Large Spool Holders for the ArtBin Double Deep take cones up to 5000 meters.

The problem

Why the stock holder tops out at 54

The spool holder that comes with Artbin boxes is designed for small spools. Put 38 mm embroidery spools on it and you can't use every pin — only 54 fit neatly, with a lot of wasted space between them. This design repacks the same footprint so every pin holds a large spool: 64 in the box.

Built to lift out

Four sections, one hand

Each section has a centered handle, so you can lift out just the 16 spools you're working from and leave the rest in the box — less space on your sewing table, and the deck is stiffer than the stock insert.

Each section also carries a 4x4 Gridfinity base. Set a Gridfinity baseplate on your table and the sections click in place instead of sliding around.

Behind the design

A box of spools and a sister's ask

This model started as a request from my sister, who had more embroidery and quilting thread spools than an Artbin box could hold neatly. Her choice was jamming them in to raise capacity, or wasting space in the bin — because the stock pin layout assumes smaller spools. She handed me the spools and the ask.

Several hours in Fusion and several prototypes later — print, revise, repeat — this is the design that earned its place in her craft room. It went on to become one of the shop's most-downloaded models, and its comment thread later sparked the Double Deep holders for even larger cones.

What's included

Two plates — print each twice for the full set

The profile's two plates are two different section designs that interlock in the box. Print each plate twice to get the full set of four sections — about 14.8 hours and 460 g of filament in total.

Print settings
  • Material: PLA works great (that's what I used); any filament should do.
  • Printers: prints on Bambu Lab A, P, X and H series.
  • Supports: already set up in the profile — critical regions only, build plate only, with a 0.5 mm XY gap so they pop off cleanly.
  • Everything else is standard 0.4 mm nozzle defaults at 0.24 mm layers.
Slicer setup — why these settings
  • Tree supports, critical regions only + build plate only — the slots in the base are the only spots that need help, so the supports stay minimal (see the slicer preview in the gallery). The 0.5 mm XY gap means they pop out by hand.
  • Arachne wall generation — my default slicer setting: a more elegant way to handle model thicknesses that don't equal an exact multiple of wall widths.
  • 0.24 mm layer height — faster prints on a part with no fine details that would benefit from thinner layers.
