Large Spool Holders for the ArtBin Double Deep

5000-meter cones, organized — up to 36 spools in one ArtBin box.

Designed at the request of embroiderers and quilters who used the original Artbin spool holder but needed room for bigger thread: cones loaded with up to 5000 meters, and spool bases as wide as 72 mm. Three versions let you choose between maximum capacity, maximum color visibility, or extra-large spools — all sized for the ArtBin Super Satchel Double Deep.

Maximum capacity, maximum color visibility, or extra-large spools — every version is sized for the same box.

Base version — nine spools lifted out at once by the built-in handle

1 · Base — High Capacity

36 spools

Bases up to 60 mm. Alternates spools right-side-up and upside-down so more fit in the box. Each of the four pieces has a built-in handle — lift nine spools out at once to see your colors, then drop them back in.

Visibility version with all spools right-side-up

2 · Visibility

25 spools

Bases up to 60 mm. Every spool sits right-side-up, so every thread color is visible the moment the lid opens. Fewer spools, zero hunting. Now ships with two post heights — the original 40 mm posts, plus taller 80 mm tapered posts that steady big cones so they can't tip.

Bases up to 72 mm. Recessed wells accept the widest spool bases, alternating right-side-up and inverted. A 5000 m king cone drops straight onto a peg.

Tall tapered posts and deeper wells for the tallest cones

Tall embroidery and serger cones sit high and tip easily on short posts. The Visibility version now includes a second set of four plates with 80 mm posts that taper to a 15 mm tip — the cone drops on, the taper self-centers it, and it stays upright instead of leaning on its neighbors. Spool bores aren't standardized, but the taper fits a wide variety of the cones out there. The wells the spools sit in are also about 2 mm deeper, giving the lid a little more room to close over taller spools.

Prefer the original look, or have a spool the tall post doesn't suit? The 40 mm posts are still included — and because each quadrant is its own plate, you can run tall posts in one quadrant and short posts in another, in any combination. Both post heights ship in the Visibility print profile.

Designed for the box

Seats flat, stays put, tells you where it goes

Every version's base is shaped around the ridges and rails inside the Artbin box, so the pieces seat flat and stay put. Each piece is labeled with its location in the box (Front Left, Back Right...) — no puzzling over which quadrant goes where.

No assembly: print the four pieces, drop them into the box in their labeled positions.

Behind the design

Two comments and a borrowed box of spools

This design started in the comments on the High-Capacity Artbin Embroidery Spool Holder, one of the shop's most popular models. Two users asked for a holder that could take much larger spools, and one pointed to the ArtBin Super Satchel Double Deep as the right box for them.

I know little about quilting, embroidery, or sewing — but my sister is very proficient. I borrowed several large spools from her, bought a Double Deep bin, and set out to see what I could do.

Inside the Fusion design

Two parameters, then a fight for every spool

The borrowed spools came in a wide range of sizes, so the model is built in Fusion 360 around two main user parameters: maximum spool diameter and spool hole size. Peg dimensions, well layout, and spacing all follow from those two values — change them and the design adapts.

With the parameters set, I tested layout patterns to maximize how many spools fit in one box — linear and hexagonal grids, with alternating spool orientations and all-same orientations. Packing in the most spools sacrificed how well you can see thread types and colors, and that trade-off wouldn't resolve. So it became the product line: a capacity variant, a visibility variant, and an extra-large variant in case the really big cones show up.

The base plate is divided into quadrants so each piece fits on a build plate — and, on the capacity version, so several spools can be removed as a set. That version gets built-in handles for lifting a loaded quadrant out to see the colors; the visibility versions don't need them, because every spool is already in view and can be removed individually.

Print times are for the designer profiles on MakerWorld. The Base and XL versions print as four plates; the Visibility version includes eight — four with 40 mm posts and four with 80 mm tapered posts. Print only the plates you need.

Print settings
  • Material: PLA works fine; any material you prefer will do — nothing about the design is material-critical.
  • Printers: Prints on Bambu Lab A, P, X and H series. A1 mini: Base version only — the Visibility and XL pieces exceed its build plate.
  • Supports: enabled, same material as the model. A separate interface material improves appearance and removability — accept Bambu Studio's recommended defaults if you use one.
  • No assembly: print the four pieces and drop them into the box in their labeled positions.
Slicer setup — why these settings
  • 0.24 mm layer height — faster prints, and the model has no fine details that would benefit from thinner layers.
  • 3 walls, 10% infill — three walls carry the strength, which lets the infill drop to save filament and print time.
  • Support distance increased slightly — supports are only needed for the slots in the base, and backing them off makes them pop out easily. The supported surfaces are hidden, so the small finish trade-off costs nothing visible.
